The HFM400 is a pointer-type metal tube variable area flow meter for measuring the flow of compatible liquids, gases and steam. Its metal measuring tube and local mechanical indicator suit industrial lines where a glass-tube meter would not provide the required pressure, temperature or mechanical protection.
Available nominal sizes include DN15, DN25, DN50, DN80, DN100 and DN150. The meter is particularly useful for small-pipe and low-flow duties, while larger configurations extend the product family to liquid flows up to 150000 L/h and gas flows up to 3000 m³/h.
The standard design provides local pointer indication without direct contact between the measuring element and the external indicator mechanism. Depending on the selected configuration, the HFM400 can also provide a dual-line LCD, two-wire 4–20 mA transmission, HART communication and a dry-contact alarm output.
Each meter must be selected for the actual medium, operating flow, density, viscosity, pressure, temperature, flange standard and required signal. These conditions determine the measuring element, calibrated scale, wetted material and pressure-temperature configuration.
It is suitable for measuring the flow rate of medium with small diameter and low velocity
Reliable operation, small amount of maintenance, long life
Requirements for straight section are not high
Wider range ratio of 10:1
Double-line LIQUID crystal display, field instantaneous/cumulative flow displa
There is a keyboard on the indicator for easy operation and setting
All-metal structure, suitable for high temperature, high pressure and strong corrosive mediu
Non-contact magnetic coupling transmissio
Can be used in inflammable and explosive dangerous occasions
Optional DC power supply or battery power supply mode
With data recovery, data backup and power down protection functions
Multi-parameter calibration function
The pointer gives operators a direct view of flow at the pipe. It can be used where local indication is sufficient or combined with an electronic output when the signal must also be sent to a PLC, DCS, recorder or remote display.
The measuring cone, float and process connections form a robust metal flow path. This construction is suitable for process environments where a transparent measuring tube is not preferred. Material compatibility still has to be checked against the medium and cleaning conditions.
Float movement is transferred through the tube wall by magnetic coupling. There is no mechanical shaft penetrating the measuring tube between the process and the indicator, which separates the pressurized process chamber from the external pointer mechanism.
Variable area measurement does not depend on a high-speed turbine rotor or an electromagnetic field. The HFM400 generally needs less straight pipe than many velocity-based meters, but installation disturbances must still be considered. Valves, reducers and pumps should not create unstable flow or float oscillation at the meter inlet.
The HFM400 can be configured around local reading, remote transmission, totalization, material selection, pressure class and temperature duty. Optional electronics can include parameter setting, calibration data storage, backup and power-loss protection.

The standard round indicator displays instantaneous flow on a graduated dial. It requires no process penetration for the magnetic coupling and can provide local indication without loop power when no electronic functions are selected.
The pointer scale is prepared for the stated medium and flow unit. Custom scale marking should be defined during ordering when the project uses engineering units or reference conditions other than the standard quotation.
An electronic indicator can provide a two-line LCD for instantaneous and cumulative flow. Keyboard operation allows permitted parameters to be set at the instrument. This option requires the appropriate transmitter and power configuration and is not part of every pointer-only meter.
The standard indicator enclosure is specified to IP65 when correctly assembled and installed. Cable glands, covers and unused entries must be sealed as required to maintain enclosure protection. IP65 describes protection against dust and water jets; it does not mean the meter can be submerged.
The HFM400 can be configured for flow monitoring in suitable processes across:
Petrochemical and chemical processing
Iron and steel production
Electric power systems
Metallurgical and mining operations
Light industrial manufacturing
Food and beverage utilities
Pharmaceutical utility systems
Water and wastewater treatment
Gas distribution and process skids
Steam and thermal-process systems
Application suitability depends on the selected materials, calibrated range, cleanliness of the medium, operating conditions and applicable site requirements.
It may indicate flow, but the original scale may no longer meet its specified accuracy. Density and viscosity change the float position. Provide the new liquid properties and operating temperature so the need for correction, a replacement scale or recalibration can be assessed.
Not without technical evaluation. Gas composition, operating pressure, temperature and selected standard or actual volume conditions affect density and the calibrated result. A gas-specific scale or conversion is normally required.
Possible causes include deposits on the float or guide, a tilted installation, internal damage, magnetic coupling interference or a pointer mechanism problem. Isolate, depressurize and inspect the meter according to site procedures; do not force the pointer externally.
Only after confirming face-to-face length, flange size, standard, pressure class, facing and flow direction. The replacement scale, material, pressure-temperature rating and electronic outputs must also match the process and control system.
Not necessarily. Local indication and transmitted output may have separate tolerances. The complete loop also includes transmitter conversion, wiring, input resolution and PLC or DCS scaling. Acceptance criteria should identify whether they apply to the dial, current output or complete measurement loop.
